Paul J. Mesner, Founder

Paul started his career as a puppeteer at an early age and has become one of the premier puppeteers in the country. After studying at the prestigious Institute of Puppetry in Charleville-Mezier, France, he moved to Kansas City to found Paul Mesner Puppets in 1987. His precise craftsmanship, dynamic presentation and humorous tales are hallmarks of today’s Mesner Puppet Theater.  Paul’s numerous awards include two UNIMA-USA Citations for Excellence in Puppetry, the Missouri Arts Council Individual Artist of the Year, and the Distinguished Service to Education Award from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Mike Horner, Artistic Director 

Mike has been a creative force with Mesner Puppets for nine years. He is a principal puppeteer for the company as well as the lead puppet builder and designer. Mike performs in Mesner Puppets' annual season of shows and tours nationally and internationally. He recently returned from Hamburg, Germany where he performed at the Hamburger Puppet Theater. Mike’s reputation has led him to build puppets for other theater productions in Kansas City, including "Shrek the Musical" at the Jewish Community Center and "The Oldest Boy" at the Unicorn Theatre.

Alex Espy, Education Director for MPT, provides education workshops for a wide-range of groups and organizations throughout the United States. Alex has primarily worked in Theatre for Young Audiences as a producer, director, designer, actor, and teaching artist. His Kansas City directing credits include “Alice in Wonderland” for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and “Peter and the Wolf” for the Kansas City Symphony.
